Srimati Radharani - The Universal Mother

Krishna means “all-attractive”, someone who is supremely opulent enough to attract everybody. However, Srimati Radharani is so great that She attracts Krishna.
tapta-kanchana-gaurangi - radhe vrindavaneshvari
vrishabhanu-sute devi pranamami hari-priye

Srimati Radharani, I offer my respects to You whose bodily complexion is like molten gold. O Goddess, You are the queen of Vrindavana. You are the daughter of King Vrishabhanu, and are very dear to Lord Krishna.

The Supreme Person - Lord Krishna

Cherish the treasure all, the happy day has come,
The Supreme Person Lord Krishna has appeared;
Mathura The holy place, the all auspicious abode,
The Lord and Master of all the cause of causes.

O Lord You swiftly moved to Vrindavan after appearance,
Accepts Yashoda Nanda your devotees as parents for pleasure;
You are the darling of all Vrajavasis, the loved butter theif,
O dear enchanter Lord Krishna, I want to sing your glories always.

Clad in yellow garment decorated with flowers, You are rising sun,
The Divine flute touches Your sweet lips, the sweet music drowns one;
Your dance pose of three bends attracts even cupids, O Madan Mohana,
O Lord of compassion remove fear of worldy existence, thou salutations.

You as cowherd boy from Nandagrama gives happiness to elderly gopis,
Positioning Yourself as their son when Brahma stole playfully in illusion;
O Lord you are the protector of devotees, the destroyer of miscreants,
So push thy onward march, O pious soul a real hero stands for one indeed.

Fallen in spine-chilling material world, I am in agony till very end,
My heart burns in the fire of sense gratification, I pour butter instead water;
One who associates Your devotees and worships You only suffering ceases,
I try to take shelter of Your lotus feet as my life and death.

When will I meet that Lord Krishna, who is dark in complexion,
When will I be able to serve You in various ways, and give a seat in my heart;
Decorate with peacock feather, Cook food offer sandalwood paste, other fragnances,
O Lord Krishna, the son of Nanda when will these happen, I the fallen soul take pity on me.

Such a wicked mind I have, it binds me to this material world to enjoy the senses,
To acaryas prayers You answered, Your pure and elevated devotees finally has come;
One of Your associates called Srila Prabhupada the expert navigator of material ocean,
O Lord hearing Your devotees words I came weeping to Your lotus feet and tell my story.

Give thou shelter at Your lotus feet O Lord Krishna even Goddess Lakshmi desires,
O Lord I accept my defeat as all my endeavors are useless and sing Your holy name;
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare,
Hare Rama    Hare Rama     Rama    Rama    Hare Hare.

5 easy steps to be part of Lord's Pastime

In our previous article, “The Ongoing divine PASTIMES of The Lord”, we shared somethings about the Lord's pastimes which are still going on. We tried to point out, how rare is this opportunity to be part of such pastimes. We have also seen a few examples from the previous ages, how pride and ego blind or deludes a soul from understanding the authenticity and urgency of the movement. We should not be foolishly arrogant like Hiranakashipu, Hiranyakshya, Ravana, Kansa, Duryodhana, Chand Kazi, Jagai, Madhai and other demonic personalities who were present right in front of Lord but couldn’t understand that He was The Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Let us see 5 easy steps to become a part of Lord's Pastime and associate ourselves with the movement.

Step - 1: Attaining the qualification to become human beings.

We must understand Lord's movement is for human beings only. We are now born in the human form of life. Actual intelligence is to think, understand and self-evaluate if we are actually leading a life of a human or an animal.

It is said that
AhAra-nidrA-bhaya-maithunam cha
samAnam_etat_pashubhir_narANAm |
dharmo hi teShAm adhiko visheSho
dharmeNa hInAH pashubhiH samAnAH||

"Eating, sleeping, defending and mating, these acts of humans are similar to animals. Of them (humans), dharma (religious conduct) is the only special thing, without dharma humans are also animals"

So if we spend our lives focusing only on eating, sleeping, defending and mating, we will be no better than animals.

We must inquire and try to understand the higher goal or purpose of human life.

Step - 2: Understanding the Higher Goal of Human Life.

The higher goal of Human life is to re-establish our lost relationship with God.

Just as we all have relationships in the material world, similarly each of us also has a relationship with the Supreme Person, Krishna. Unlike the materialistic relationships which are temporary (because they end with the body), the relationship with Lord is eternal.

Our basic relationship with Krishna is that we are His parts and parcels. He is like the sun, the ocean, or fire; we are like the sun's rays, drops of the ocean or sparks of the fire. Problem is most people in this material world are trying to forget God completely.

Why? Because there are two major hindrances in the path of Krishna Consciousness - Maya Devi & Kali Yuga who bewilder the soul and pull them away from Krishna. They together play the dangerous role of illusionist and bewilders the souls. This bewilderment is so strong that we do not even realize our pitiable condition. Like Srila Prabhupada has said;

There are three kinds of miseries of life: adhyatmika, adibhautika, adi-daivika, Instead of understanding that we are being punished for sinful activities, under the spell of illusory energy we are thinking that this kicking, slapping and thrashing are accidental.

Srila Prabhupada had also said once

Tiny living entities crawling on a little planet and are thinking "I am great"

How to deal with these hindrances?

Dealing with the fangs of Maya.

kṛṣṇa--sūrya-sama; māyā haya andhakāra
yāhāṅ kṛṣṇa, tāhāṅ nāhi māyāra adhikāra

Krishna is compared to sunshine, and Maya is compared to darkness. Wherever there is sunshine, there cannot be darkness. As soon as one takes to Krishna consciousness, the darkness of illusion (the influence of the external energy) will immediately vanish.

Dealing with the ill effects of Kali Yuga.

harer-nama harer-nama harer-namaiva kevalam kalau nasty-eva nasty-eva nasty-eva gatir anyatha

Harinama, Harinama, Harinama is the only and foremost means to achieve emancipation. There is no other way, no other way, no other way in this age of Kali.

So the only way to make progress towards Krishna and at the same time remain safe from Maya and Kali Yuga is to chant Hari Naam and be Krishna Conscious.

Step - 3: Making pillars of spirituality strong.

There are four requirements for healthy progress in Krishna Consciousness. These are the pillars of Krishna Consciousness. Even if one is broken, our devotion will collapse.

Pillar 1. Real Compassion.

Pure water means you do not add anything to it, but take out all the contamination. Similarly, pure love means you don’t put anything external; rather you take out all the dirt from your heart, and then you will experience pure love of God. , Compassion is an essential element of love.
– H.H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Only a soft heart can have the qualification to understand the pure love of God. Therefore it is mandatory to be compassionate towards every soul and have mercy on them. The grossest way of being heartless is to kill someone.

Therefore the first point is No Non-vegetarian Diet (meat, fish, egg) / no killing of animals for satisfying our tongue.

Pillar 2. Austerity.

Austerity means putting aside our selfish ambitions for a higher purpose.
– H.H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

For all classes of men, be an athlete or a student or a spiritualist, too much of bodily comfort becomes a barrier to his progress. To willingly take discomfort is called tapasya or austerity. Thus, when a student studies while his mind wants to play or sleep, when an athlete exercises even though giving pain to his body or a spiritualist keeps a fast or chants for hours, all of them are doing austerity in their own field. To be austere one must have a strong mind. Weak mind fails to focus. People with a weak mind are being controlled by desires which disturb one's determination. Those who are under the influence of intoxicants have the weakest mind.

Therefore the second point is No Intoxication (cigarette, alcohol, drugs or caffeine products like tea, coffee etc).

Pillar 3. Truthfulness.

A spiritualist should be truthful as it is considered to be an important virtue. If a person cheats others, he is cheating himself because it is Maya or illusory energy who bewilders his intelligence to take the path of cheating. The grossest way of cheating occurs when one gambles.

Hence No Gambling of any form.

Pillar 4. Cleanliness.

sex could be a gift of God but when it becomes an obsession, it plunders all intelligence and people are driven to abominable acts to satisfy their lust.
– H.H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Needless to say, cleanliness is another very important aspect of spirituality. Normally all of us focus only on the external cleanliness. However, we shouldn't forget internal cleanliness also, which means to have a clean consciousness. The lowest consciousness is to have insurmountable desire to enjoy bodily pleasures. Vedic Scripture allows a religious way of indulging into sexual life, by the bond of marriage, which must not be broken. Sex life outside the sacred vows of marriage is counted amongst, illicit relationship, according to the laws made by God. Animals like dogs and cats mate freely with no bondage because they are not given the higher human life of responsibility, but as humans, we must be restricted by the bond of sacred marriage.

Hence next point is No Illicit Sex.

If you want spiritual life, you have to pay the price. The price is the four regulative principles.
– H.H. Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaj

Thus if anyone who follows the aforementioned rules of four regulative principles i.e. avoiding

(i) nonvegetarian diet,

(ii) intoxication,

(iii) gambling and

(iv) an illicit relationship,

can advance smoothly in the path of Krishna Consciousness.

Step - 4: Association of Lord's devotees

The four ways which are mentioned are actually the natural behavior of every soul. But at times it seems overwhelming to us because we haven't practiced it since countless lifetimes. The easiest way to revive our original consciousness is to be in the association of devotees.

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has repeatedly said:
'sādhu-saṅga', 'sādhu-saṅga'—sarva-śāstre kayalava-mātra sādhu-saṅge sarva-siddhi haya

Simply by associating with a pure devotee, one becomes wonderfully advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
(Chaitanya Charitamrita Madhya 22.54)

Therefore the point is the association of Vaishnavas.

Getting an association of a Vaishnava was really difficult before 13 July 1966 (when  ISKCON was officially incorporated). However by the mercy of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu and selfless service and sacrifice of Srila Prabhupada, today we can have devotee association in every corner of this globe. It is so easy now. All it requires is our serious endeavor to seek true knowledge.

Step - 5: Making a contribution to the movement.

Imagine a great bridge getting built, which will connect every town and village in this world. This bridge is Hari Naam Sankirtan movement of Lord. We contribute or don't contribute, Lord's name will reach every corner of the world because it is the desire of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So our contribution may not be significant for the movement but will definitely be a great contribution to our consciousness and our spiritual progress. Greatest contribution is by not behaving miserly but rather distributing to others what we were gifted by Acharyas and Krishna - Krishna Consciousness.

The greatest contribution will be to offer our gratefulness. Our gratefulness would be expressed as gratitude for Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu and the great souls who have sacrificed their lives so that we can get the bliss of this movement. Now it is our time to follow their footsteps and help other ignorant souls and upcoming generations to get the true blissful knowledge of life.

Summarizing 5 steps to be part of Lord's Pastime

1. Attaining the qualification to become human beings

We understand that the Lord’s movement is for human beings only. So in order to be a part of His movement, we must first try to be human in real sense and not a sophisticated animal.

2. Understanding the Higher Goal of Human Life.

The higher goal of Human life is to re-establish our lost relationship with God.

3. Making smoother progress in spirituality.

H.H. Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaj: If you want a spiritual life, you have to pay the price. The price is the four regulative principles (avoiding: nonvegetarian diet,   intoxication,   gambling   and   an illicit relationship)

4. Association of Lord’s devotees.

Simply by associating with a pure devotee, one becomes wonderfully advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Also staying in devotee association helps us to stay safe from the influence of Maya and Kaliyuga as discussed in "In the Middle of a Hunting Ground, with the Predators!!".

5. Making a contribution to the movement.

By helping other ignorant souls and upcoming generations to get the true blissful knowledge of life.

Let us pray to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda to allow us spiritual strength and intelligence to be connected and make an honest contribution to Their pastimes.

How to survive in the Middle of a Hunting Ground, with the Predators!!

Once in an episode of Animal Planet, it was shown, a pride of lions trying to hunt down a buffalo. The entire herd fought with all their strength to save him from the lions. All of a sudden, the buffalo got confused and ran away from the herd, straight into the pride. It was an easy victory for the lions and suicide for the confused buffalo. The herd stood at a distance, helplessly looking at their member dying in front of their eyes.

Welcome to the harsh reality of “The Hunting Ground”!!

Maya & Kali Yuga - the two deadly predators, are jointly working along with their agents, just like a pack of lions, to hunt us (the souls) down. We should be cautious not to be as ignorant as the Buffalo. But how to save ourselves?

It has been predicted in Srimad Bhagavatam about Kali Yuga, that

Religion, truthfulness, cleanliness, tolerance, mercy, duration of life, physical strength and memory will all diminish day by day because of the powerful influence of the age of Kali.
[Srimad Bhagvatam - 12.2.1]

Uncultured men will accept charity on behalf of the Lord and will earn their livelihood by making a show of austerity and wearing a mendicant’s dress. Those who know nothing about religion will mount a high seat and presume to speak on religious principles.
[Srimad Bhagvatam - 12.3.38]

Cities will be dominated by thieves, the Vedas will be contaminated by speculative interpretations of atheists, political leaders will virtually consume the citizens, and the so-called priests and intellectuals will be devotees of their bellies and genitals.
[Srimad Bhagvatam - 12.3.32]

With each passing moment, Kali Yuga is gaining its strength, because His influence is increasing on us, which is why people are getting diverted from Religion, creating an irreligious & Godless society and since society is becoming atheists, Kali Yuga is gaining its strength. It is a cycle.

Kali Yuga Empowerment Cycle

Hence it is not very surprising to find so many leaders, politicians, intellectuals, movies, books and websites flooding around us which questions the existence of God, at times (directly or indirectly) supporting or promoting irreligious activities (like cow slaughter) and thus pulling people away from God Consciousness. People who have no knowledge about scriptures are coming forefront (live on media or TV Channels) with their speculative interpretations and preaching Vedic knowledge in their own whimsical way. That is why we have so many versions of Bhagavad Gita in bookstores, but hardly any of these are actually addressing the core message. Definitely, their motive is not to uplift the Godless society but to fill their own bank account. And now there is a trend to see self-proclaimed Godmen who openly reject the Vedic Scriptures.

There are some occasions when we meet the devotees of Lord or Vaishnava. For example, during the month of Geeta Jayanti, devotees distribute Bhagavad Gita in streets, malls, parking lots, railway stations, parks everywhere. It is then we actually understand the philosophical depth of the following verse spoken by Lord Krishna, in Bhagavad Gita – 7.3:

Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.

Because instead of embracing the moment, we mock at devotees, blaspheme and insult them or even chase them away assuming them to be a salesman. What we do not understand is, a Vaishnava is "para dukha dukhi" [one who suffers seeing the suffering of others]

We are the suicidal buffalo and these devotees, out of their causeless mercy, enters the hunting ground, trying to fight for us, against the claws of Maya & Kali Yuga. If we chase the devotees off, thinking ourselves to be intellectually enlightened by modern science, we will then prove ourselves to be as smart as the buffalo, who “isolated” himself from his guardian herd by his “ignorance” and ran straight into the hungry jaws.

It is really a pitiable condition. By the causeless mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (who is none different from Supreme Personality of Godhead – Sri Krishna) & endless sacrifice of Srila Prabhupada & other Vaisnava Acharyas, Hari Naam is distributed freely to each one of us, across the globe, yet we (especially Indians) are not eager to grab it.

However, despite all of its dark nature, there is one good quality in this age of Kali Yuga:
Although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: simply by chanting the names of Krishna, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom.
[Srimad Bhagvatam - 12.3.51]

Along with the chanting, we need to follow the strategy owned by animals – we need to be in a pack. When animals are in a group, predators find it difficult to hunt them down. We need to save ourselves in the association of Vaisnavas.

So let us take advantage of this special spiritual gift given during the dark times of Kali Yuga to quickly raise ourselves spiritually by chanting of God’s, Sri Krishna’s, holy names and keep an association of devotees  always, otherwise, we would be an easy prey to Maya and Kali Yuga set out for hunting.

Hare Krishna!

The Ongoing Divine Pastimes of The Lord

Many times my wife and I discuss how blissful would have been the experience of those fortunate souls who were present during the various pastimes of the Lord. I am sure many people wished to be present during the period when Lord was carrying out His pastimes. Even we two used to repent many times, wishing, if we could be present then until we realized we are already present in an ongoing divine pastime of The Lord.

About some 500 years ago, this material world was extremely blessed and purified by the auspicious appearance of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is non-different from The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna and Sri Nityananda is non-different from Lord Balaram.

Vrajendra-nandana jei, saci-suta hoilo sei, balarama hoilo nitai

Lord Krishna, who is the son of the King of Vraja, became the son of Saci (Lord Caitanya), and Balarama became Nitai.

During Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's pastimes, thousands and thousands of souls, as fallen as Jagai and Madhai were blessed by the Lord and delivered from this material world, with the potency of Hari Naam.

dina-hina jata chilo, hari-name uddharilo, tara sakshi jagai madhai

The holy name delivered all those souls who were lowly and wretched. The two sinners Jagai and Madhai are evidence of this.

Hari Naam or Hare Krishna Mahamantra has nothing to do with this material world. It is golokera prema-dhana, which means "The treasure of divine love in Goloka Vrindavana has descended as the congregational chanting of Lord Hari’s holy names."

Lord Caitanya also declares in Sri Caitanya-Bhagavata (Antya, 4.126):

ebe nama sankirtana tiksna khadga laiya
antara asura jivera pheliba katiya
yadi papi chadi dharma dura dese yaya
mora senapati-bhakta yaibe tathaya

Taking the sharp sword of the congregational chanting of the Holy Name, I will root out and destroy the demoniac mentality in the hearts of the conditioned souls. If some sinful people escape and giving up religious principles go to far off countries, then My commander in chief (Senapati Bhakta) will appear to chase them and distribute Krsna consciousness.

His commander in chief (Senapati Bhakta) is none other than His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who was deployed from Spiritual world to deliver souls across the globe.

So actually the divine pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu have not yet come to an end. We are in an extension period of His pastimes (The Golden Era) and we are so much fortunate to be present in this age.

Having said and understood our fortune, we must not forget that when Lord was physically present in front of Hiranakashipu, Hiranyakshya, Ravana, Kansa, Duryodhana, Chand Kazi, Jagai, Madhai and all other demonic personalities, none of them could understand that He was The Supreme Personality of Godhead.

It happens every time in every age, it is only a few fortunate souls who could make use of their intelligence, could understand. While others blinded by their false ego and pride and using their own speculative intellect reject their only savior, the Supreme Lord.

Therefore how fortunate or how unfortunate we are, actually depends on us, our consciousness, our intelligence. Needless to say, we must be really intelligent and active not to miss the opportunity that has been graced upon us.

Understanding The Mission.

In Chaitanya Bhagvat Mahaprabhu himself said,

Prithivi te ache joto nagar adi gram,
sarvatra prachar hoibe mora naam;

Which means that the holy name will be preached in all the villages and towns of the world.

This is an intimate desire of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Thus the Krishna Conscious movement was established by The Supreme Lord Himself. And to fulfill His desire is the heart and soul of all the Vaishnava Acharyas in His lineage.

After Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, His teachings were widely propagated by the Shad Goswamis (Srila Rupa Goswami , Sanatana Goswami , Jiva Goswami , Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami , Gopala Bhatta Goswami & Raghunatha Dasa Goswami ). Then their disciples further took the responsibility of spreading the Holy Name. This auspicious mission of Krishna Consciousness was later given a form of Society by Srila Prabhupada and came to be known as the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, better known as ISKCON.

And we can see in this cold freezing darkness of Kaliyuga, how ISKCON has spread like a warm blanket across the entire globe. Disciples of Srila Prabhupada are now continuing the mission of spreading God Consciousness or Krishna Consciousness by spreading the Holy Names.

We have a great opportunity to associate ourselves with Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's movement that was started 500 years back by the Lord Himself and is still going on. It is His pastime.

Let us pray that may we never be bewildered by the lifestyle of any bewildered souls and reject this rarest of rare opportunity to associate ourselves with Lord's Pastime.

Lord Krishna | Drawing

सर्वोपनिषदो गावो दोग्धा गोपालनंदनः ।
पार्थो वत्सः सुधीर्भोक्तादुग्धं गीतामृतः महत् ॥.

This Gitopanisad, Bhagavad-gita, the essence of all the Upanishads, is just like a cow, and Lord Krishna, who is famous as a cowherd boy, is milking this cow.  Arjuna is just like a calf and learned scholars and pure devotees are to drink the nectarean milk of Bhagavad-gita

[Gita mahatmya 6]

Lord Krishna | Drawing

ye yatha mam prapadyante
tams tathaiva bhajamy aham
mama vartmanuvartante
manushyam partha sarvashah

As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My path in all respects, O son of Pritha.
Bhagavad Gita 4.11

Thus Krishna appears as death for the atheist and as the loving protector for His devotee. Like He appeared as Narasingha, a protector for Prahalad Maharaj and death for Hiranakashipu.

The Secret is Revealed

Once a friend of mine visited us and presented us with a book called ‘The Secret’. This is a best-selling 2006 self-help motivational book authored by Rhonda Byrne. The book is based on the belief of the law of attraction and describes how our thoughts can shape our lives. The author states that every thought has a frequency, it is a force by which we attract what we think and when one emits the perfect frequency of what one wants, the item is attracted and delivered. In this book, the author reveals a secret – a secret by which one can acquire wealth, power, good health and good relationships.

The secret is to
ask – for what we want,
believe– that we have received it and finally
receive – feel as though we have received it; and it will then be ours.

This could be applied to any field- literature, religion, philosophy. All the people who knew this secret have been the greatest achievers in history: Plato, Newton, Shakespeare, Beethoven, Lincoln, Edison, Einstein.

As I read this book, a thought crept up in my mind. Does this principle of the law of attraction also hold true in the spiritual plane?  To my surprise, I found great similarity in the concept of the Secret and teachings of Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita.

Krishna means all attractive. He is full of all the six opulences, unparalleled in the entire creation. But instead of getting attracted to Krishna, we spend all our lives chasing material pleasures. This material world is described by Krishna as
temporary world, which is full of miseries
Bhagavad Gita – 8.15
Thus we always end up getting more and more entangled and frustrated. If at all we manage to get some happiness, it is transient.  We keep on pursuing happiness in this world, which is an illusion like a mirage, only because our knowledge is stolen by illusion, that we are attracted to material pleasures instead of being attracted to the Lord. The Lord states in the Gita:
Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me.
Bhagavad Gita - 7.15
Lord Krishna tells us in the Gita how we can attain Him and thus be eternally happy.
A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries.
Bhagavad Gita – 5.29
Hence if we wish to be eternally happy, we must develop intense love for Krishna and sincerely beg for His mercy.

The secret is to remember Him at all times and surrender with intelligence and mind. We should have unflinching faith and believe in His grace and then we are sure to receive His mercy.

Having said that, remembering Him constantly doesn’t mean that we neglect our material engagements or worldly duties. Rather Krishna has instructed us that while continuing in our respective material engagements and responsibilities, we must always remember Him.
Therefore Arjuna, you should always think of Me in the form of Krishna and at the same time carry out your prescribed duty (of fighting). With your activities dedicated to Me and your mind and intelligence fixed on Me, you will attain Me without doubt.
Bhagavad Gita 8.7
By fixing our mind and intelligence in Krishna and by emitting the perfect thought frequency, we can attain Him without a doubt.

Thus we too can be achievers, all we should do is very sincerely beg the Lord for His mercy, have faith in His grace and we shall certainly, receive His Mercy and go back to Godhead.

This is the secret to attain the perfection of human life.

Lessons from a Traffic Jam

5th November 2018, 7 PM, Rusha, myself and a senior devotee started from Salt Lake to catch Howrah Puri Superfast express, scheduled departure, 10:35 PM.

For the last two days, we three were discussing how to reach Howrah by avoiding the infamous traffic jam. So we came out with a foolproof plan to leave by 7:00 PM (3.5 hours early), catch the ferry and will reach station well in advance. We checked the website, it says the last ferry is at 9:00 PM. Confident on the flawless plan we knew we were in complete control of the situation.

Throughout the journey we were laughing and enjoying and sharing the experiences we had last year, we were all excited to be a part of the magnificent Yatra. Lost in our conversation we didn't notice the time. Soon we got stuck in a traffic signal for almost 15 minutes.  I saw it was slightly over 8 PM and GPS said we were 6 mins away from the destination. We congratulated each other on our intelligence. I stretched my arms, warming up to get down.

But when the signal went green, the GPS behaved crazy and it misleads our driver, who took a wrong turn and now the GPS said 35 mins to reach. We asked the speeding driver if he was sure about the route, he said he was following the GPS so no need to worry.

After 40+ mins our car halted in a dark lane with no street light and he said we have reached !!! To our left was mother Ganges and to our right was a huge wall. It was definitely not our destination!!! We asked a passerby the direction to the ghat and he said it was on the other side of the river. Hare Krishna!!! We asked the driver to quickly take us there. Once we reached the main road, the route seemed familiar. We had already lost 20 mins by now. GPS said we were 3 mins away and it was almost 9:00 PM. Just to be double sure we asked a local person about the route. To our horror he said, the route was OK but the last ferry left at 8:00 PM. So the ghat was already closed.

We went numb. We three looked at each other and requested the driver to take us to Howrah. GPS showed some 16 KMs and 1hr 45 mins. The entire route was marked red, indicating traffic jam. Our plan was meant to bypass this jam. No way could we reach in time.

I can imagine a few personalities somewhere above us, mocking at our supposedly Foolproof plan.

The car moved ahead for a minute and halted for ten. Each minute was impossible to bear. Anxiety and anticipation were taking upon us. I saw the devotee praying with his folded hands, Rusha was chanting intensely. Foolish me was still sitting and contemplating on the possibilities. I realized it was time to surrender. I too started chanting but my concentration went off by every break that the driver took.

Feeling helpless, I closed my eyes and thought to myself, whether I open my eyes or close my eyes or be anxious or not, the situation is not going to change. The car is driven by the driver and not me. The situation is managed by "someone" and not me. In the entire situation, I am just a helpless puppet. So why be anxious.

I tried to focus on the holy names, praying to Gurudev and Krishna to be merciful on to us.

To cut the remaining story short, by the sincere prayers of the other two devotees, miraculously we three reached well ahead in time.

However, this episode had taught me 2 very strong lessons, which I shamelessly keep forgetting again and again.

1. No matter how well we plan, for our future (be it career, marriage, family, education, retirement, health, wealth) we must never think we are in control or safe. We can just put our endeavor and there are 4 factors which decide whether our plan be foolproof or not.

The place of action [the body], the performer, the various senses, the many different kinds of endeavor, and ultimately the Supersoul – these are the five factors of action.
Bhagavad Gita 18.14

2. It is revealed in scriptures that we are controlled by too many elements, the 3 modes of material nature, the heavenly planets, the demigods, the 5 factors of actions and what not.

Three categories of people behave differently in any given situation.
Foolish arrogant people think they can shape their destiny by their own effort. These people repeatedly suffer from frustration and anxiety. Thus most of them find solace in intoxication because they think it cools their nerve.

Less intelligent people understand they are controlled, so they worship higher authorities like each and every demigod they come to know about, wear astrological rings and lockets etc. Even after this, these people suffer from anxiety. So they keep hopping from one demigod to another and from one astrologer to another.

Intelligent class of people is those who understand and remember that all these controlling factors are dancing in tune with Krishna's sweet will. So if Krishna wishes by His own sweet will, even a practically impossible task can easily be accomplished. All we need is to have faith in Him and hand over the steering of our car to Him. Anxiety and anticipation will not help us in any way but will make us frustrated and vulnerable to cardiac diseases.

We must always keep these two lines deeply engraved in our heart, as said by Srila Prabhupada
Rakhe krsna mare ke, mare krsna rakhe ke"If Krsna wants to kill you, who can save you? Nobody can save you. And if Krsna wants to protect you, who can kill you?"

Hare Krishna!

Who won?

Once there was a huge dispute between the strength of Heatus and Coolus. So they were summoned to the great arena of Temperus and asked to demonstrate their strength.

Heatus took the first step and flamed a candle.
Coolus dropped an ice cube on it. The flame went off.
Heatus burnt a paper and threw it on the ice cube. Ice disappeared.
Coolus took the burning paper and threw it in the LG refrigerator. Fire went off.
Heatus took the refrigerator and threw it in a blast furnace, refrigerator melted with all ice it contained.
Coolus threw the blast furness in a huge iceberg and it went cold.
Heatus threw the iceberg in a volcano, it melted off

The fight continues but let's take a  break with this question - Who is the winner?

In every round, we see that the party with greater volume wins. And in next round that winner is defeated by the opponent, again because of its volume.

Every moment we have a similar fight in our spiritual life, fight against Maya.

We come in the association of devotees, study Scriptures, chant our rounds to spiritually strengthen ourselves from Maya's attacks. To guard ourselves, we have to increase our sadhana volume by regular chanting, reading, hearing, associating with devotees.

We must understand how rare this opportunity of Krishna Consciousness is.
Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.
Bhagavad Gita 7.3

After many births and death, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.
Bhagavad Gita 7.19

When we are Maya Conscious we have to helplessly undergo the painful cycle of 84 lakh species and we are not sure after how many millions of lifetimes we will get another chance to practice Krishna Consciousness.

Many times we find people come in Krishna Consciousness with high enthusiasm but cannot continue long, because of a simple reason, Maya is stronger than their self-defense (sadhana). She gives them innumerable logics and reasons to avoid becoming Krishna Consciousness. Because of weak Sadhana, they believe those reasons.

It is seen very practically, the association or assembly of devotees is a place where everyone comes together, learn together, glorify the Supreme Personality of Godhead- Krishna. As time passes, we are taught the basics of our self-defense mechanism, i.e. Sadhana, Chanting - Hearing - Reading-Serving-Associating. Most important of the 4 are Regular Chanting and Association. This is the only defense we have against Maya.

Some of us take it seriously, some don't.

In a matter of time, we can see a change in the level of interest. As the months pass we can see a difference in attendance. Eventually, some unfortunate souls permanently leave the association. Surviving Maya alone is impossible even for yogis what to speak about we fallen souls of Kaliyuga.
This is the worst misfortune a soul can have. They get an extremely rare key to get out of this prison and then they carelessly misplace it, thus undergo the 84 lakhs species and repeated cycle of birth and death!!!

They must be having very very very strong reasons for doing so, but in reality most of the times, those reasons are nothing but an illusionary spell of Maya.

Krishna never manifests Himself to such a foolish soul, that is why they don't get any interest in Krishna Consciousness.

I am never manifest to the foolish and unintelligent. For them I am covered by My internal potency.
Bhagavad Gita 7.25

All of us must have done some pious activities for many lifetimes due to which we got this extremely rare chance to associate with devotees. This is confirmed by Krishna.

Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life and whose sinful actions are completely eradicated are freed from the dualities of delusion, and they engage themselves in My service with determination.
Bhagavad Gita 7.28

Each moment Maya is looking for an opportunity to attack us. The only defense system is our regular Sadhana. Let us not be fooled by Maya and take the path of life imprisonment.

Also we must not run into Maya's claws by committing a Vaishnava Aparadh or offending a Vaishnava.

Never let our ego make us insult or offend any Vaishnava. This Vaishnava Aparadh is the final Knock Out blow from Maya to our Krishna Consciousness and she will give us infinite reasons and opportunities to commit such an offense. *We must never ever indulge in Gossip regarding a devotee (senior junior or peer).

Acharyas suggest keeping 108 arms distance from such people who try to gossip or influence our mind with gossip.

Only when we serve Krishna and His devotees with love, Krishna gives us the intelligence to kill the darkness of Maya.

To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.
Bhagavad Gita 10.10

To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.
Bhagavad Gita 10.11

Let us all pray to Narasimha Dev for each others defense system and may we all progress in the blissful path of Krishna Consciousness as shown by our Acharyas.

Who is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu? | Is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu really Krishna?

I was asked by one of my colleague, "Who was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu?"
I replied that He is non-different from Lord Krishna.
To this, he said, "That is what 'you people' say, but what is the real identity?"

Many find it difficult to understand that Krishna is non-different from Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, because of lack in scriptural education.

To show mercy to the people and give them devotional service, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will appear in a Brahmana’s home in Navadvip by the Ganges’ shore. The Supreme Person, Sri Krishna Himself, who is the life of Srimati Radharani, and is the Lord of the universe in creation, maintenance, and annihilation, appears as Gaura, O Mahesvari.

In Kali-Yuga, I will descend to the earth with My associates. In Navadvip, which is surrounded by the Ganges, I will take birth in Sachi-devi’s womb.

They who are bewildered by My illusory potency will not understand the great secret of the appearance in this world of Me in My personal form,

in My form as the incarnation of devotion,
in My form as the incarnation of a devotee,
in My form bearing the name of a devotee,
in My form as a devotee, and
in My form as the giver of devotional service.

This secret is not to be revealed to them. Only the saintly, pure, renounced devotees, diligently engaged in My devotional service, will be able to understand Me in these five forms.

My dear male and female associates, headed by Sridama and Subala, who came to this world at the time of My advent as Lord Krishna, will come again during the Kali-Yuga.

The Gopas will become the sixtyfour mahantas and the twelve gopalas. To establish the truth of religion, I will enjoy many pastimes with them.

In this way I will again reveal the path of devotional service, which has been destroyed in the course of time. My sons should also descend to the earth, assume the forms of devotees, and, by My order, also work to re-establish the principles of true religion.

At this time My names will be: Krishna Chaitanya, Gauranga, Gaurachandra, Sachisuta, Mahaprabhu, Gaura and Gaurahari. Chanting these names will bring devotion to Me.

Other major Vedic literature describing characteristics of the advent of Sri Chaitanya

(22). The Great Epic Mahabharata (Dana-Dharma, Visnu-Sahasra-Nama Stotra) points out the divine characteristics of Sriman Mahaprabhu’s appearance.
suvarna varna hemango varangas candanangadisannyasa krt-chamah santo nistha shanti parayanahHe has a golden complexion [suvarna varnah]. His limbs are very beautiful [vara-anga] and are smeared with sandalwood pulp [candana-angadi]. He has the appearance of molten gold [hema-anga].

The Supreme Lord Chaitanya accepts the renounced order of life [sannyasa-krt]. He is fully sense-controlled or equipoised [sama], and is completely peaceful [santa]. He is completely fixed (in the chanting of the holy name of Lord Krishna), [nistha]. He is the highest abode of devotion and transcendental peace. (He silences the mayavadi impersonalists) [nistha santi parayanah].

The sanskrit words suvarna-varna indicate one who has gold-like complexion. The Vedic text to support this point is: yada pasya pasyate rukma-varnam kartaram isam purusam brahma-yonim. The words rukma-varnam kartaram isam refer to the Supreme Person [Sri Chaitanya] who has a complexion like molten gold.

(23). Is there any specific reference in the Vedas as to when in this yuga, the Supreme Lord’s Avatar- Sri Krishna Chaitanya was scheduled to appear?
In the Atharva-Veda; Purusa-Bodini-Upanisad, it is said:
saptame gaura-varna-visnor ity aena sva-saktyacaikyam etya pratar avatirya saha svaih sva-manum siksayati

In the seventh manvantara, in the beginning of the Kali-Yuga, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will, accompanied by His own associates, descend in a golden form to the earth. He will teach the chanting of His own names.

(24). When exactly does He come in the kali-yuga, and where does He specifically appear and what will He do?
In the Atharva Veda, the Supreme Person says:
itotham krta sannyaso’vatarisyami sa-guno nirvedoniskamo bhu-girvanas tira-atho’ lakanandayah kalaucatuh-sahasrabdhopari panca-sahasrabhyantaregaura-varno dirghangah sarva-laksana-yukta isvaraprarthito nija-rasasvado bhakta-rupo misrakhyovidita-yogah syam

I will descend on the earth after the passage of four thousand years in the Kali-Age, [kalau chatuh sahasrabdhopari] and before the passage of five thousand years [pancha sahasra abhyantare]. I will come on the earth on the bank of the Ganges, [tira-sthahalakanandayah].

I will be a tall and saintly Brahmana devotee. I will have all the auspicious symptoms of an exalted person [dirghangah sarva-laksana-yuktah].

I will exhibit renunciation. I will have all auspicious signs. I will be a devotee, practicing bhakti yoga. I will taste the rasa of My own devotional service.

In the Sama Veda, the Supreme Lord says:
tathaham krta sannyaso bhu-girvano ‘vatarisyetire’lakanandayah punah punah isvara-prarthitah sa-parivaro niralambo nirdhuteh kali-kalmasa-kavalita-janavalambanaya

I shall come to the earth, accompanied by My associates, in a place by the bank of the Ganges. I will advent to save the people who are afflicted and devoured by the sins of the age of Kali. I will manifest as an Avadhut Brahman Sannyasi.

(25). What is the name of the place where the Supreme Lord appears?
The Chandogya Upanisad describes the place of the advent of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya. In the Sabadvipa Dham Mahatmya (text 5) Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur explains:
tan-madhye daharam saksan mayapuram itiryatetatra vesma bhagavatas chaitanyasya paratmanahtasmin yas tv antarakaso hy antardvipah sa ucyate

The spiritual city in the shape of a lotus has the abode of Sri Mayapur as its heart. Sridham Mayapur is the divine abode of Lord Chaitanya, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In the middle of Mayapur is the place called Antardvip.

(26). Are there any other relevant scriptural references in the vedas describing the appearance or qualities of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu?
The Svetasvatara Upanisad (Ch. 6, text 7) describes the qualities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Chaitanya:
tam isvaranam paramam mahesvaram tam devatanam paramam ca daivatampatim patinam paramam parastad vidama devam bhuvanesam idyam

O Supreme Lord, you are the Supreme Mahesvara, the worshipable Deity of all the demigods and the Supreme Lord of all Lords. You are the controller of all controllers, the Personality of Godhead, the Lord of everything worshipable.

Svetasvatara Upanisad Ch 3 text 12, 14
mahan prabhur vai purusahsattvasyaisa pravartakahsunirmalam imam praptim isano jyotir avyayah

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead is Mahaprabhu, who disseminates transcendental enlightenment. Just to be in touch with Him is to be in contact with the indestructible brahmajyoti. ”

Sri Chaitanya Upanisad (Chaitanyopanisad), text 5:
jahnavi-tire navadvipe golokakhye dhamni govindodvi-bhujo gaurah sarvatma maha-puruso mahatmamaha-yogi tri-gunatitah sattva-rupo bhaktim lokekasyatiti. tad ete sloka bhavanti

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, the supreme enjoyer, whose form is transcendental, who is beyond the touch of the three modes of material nature, and who is all pervading Supersoul residing in the-hearts of all living entities, will appear again in the Kali-age. Appearing as the greatest devotee, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will assume a two-armed form of golden complexion in His abode of Goloka Vrindavan manifested on the bank of the Ganga at Navadvip. He will disseminate pure devotional service in the world.

(32). Quotations of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s bodily features according to some of the great devotees present at the time
Srila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, one of the foremost disciples of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Jagannath Puri, composed an entire series of prayers describing in detail the various features of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, called Sri Gauranga-Prati-Anga-Varnanakhya-Stava-Rajah, or the King of Prayers, proclaiming the glory of each limb of Sri Gauranga. Let us carefully present a few of these divine gems.

Lord Chaitanya’s bodily luster:
Srila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, a great scholar of his time, who later became a disciple of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, has described the complexion of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s body.

tapta hema dyutim vande kali-krishnam jagad-gurumcaru-dirgha-tanum srimac chaci-hrdaya-nandanam

I worship Lord Krishna, the spiritual master of the universe, who appears in the age of Kali with a luster like molten gold. His body is beautiful and tall. He is like molten gold, and He is the delight and the son of Sachidevi.

Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati Thakura also describes Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s golden complexion.
ananda lilamaya vigrahaya hemabha-divya-cchavi-sundaraya

O Lord Chaitanyachandra, O Lord whose form is full of blissful pastimes, O Lord whose complexion is as splendid as gold…

Srila Krishna das Kaviraj Goswami similarly describes Lord Chaitanya:
tapta hema sama kanti prakanda sarira

…the luster of His expansive body resembles molten gold…

Prabodhananda Sarasvati further describes Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s golden complexion.
svayam devo yatra-kanaka-gaurah karunaya

“His complexion is as fair as molten gold.”

Sri Chaitanya’s beautiful hair:
lasan-mukha-lata-naddha charu-kuncita-kuntalam

“His lovely curling locks are interwoven with creepers of glistening pearls…”

Sri Chaitanya’s shoulders and chest:
Prabhodananda Sarasvati Thakura describes the shoulders of Sriman Mahaprabhu as simha skandham…“whose shoulders are like a lion…”

Srila Krishna das Kaviraj Goswami also points out the nature of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s shoulders and voice:

simha griva simha-virya simhera hunkar – “He has the shoulders of a lion, the powers of a lion, and the loud voice of a lion.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s arms reach all the way to His knees:

ajanulambita bhumau kanaka vadatau

And kankanangada-vidyoti-janu-lambi-bhaja-dvayam – “….His two arms, glittering with bracelets and bangles, extend down to His knees.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s face:
prema-pravaha-madhura raktotpala-vilocanam
h la-prasuna-susnigdha nutanayata-nasikam

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s beautiful eyes are just like reddish lotus flowers. They are most beautiful, just like lakes of Krishna Prema. His nose is arched and is resplendent just like the sesame flower.
sri-ganda-mandollasi ratna-kundala-manditam
savya-karna-suvinyasta sphurac-caru-sikhandakam

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s cheeks are round and they shine brilliantly. He wears jeweled earrings. He has a peacock feather placed near His left ear.
madhura-sneha-susnigdha praraktadhara-pallavam
isad-danturita-snigdha sphuran-mukta-radoijvalam

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s lips are tender and very lustrous. They resemble reddish blossoming flowers. He reveals his pearl-like teeth out His kindness.

Chaitanya-Charitamrita, Adi-Lila 3.77
sankirtana-pravartaka sri krma-chaitanya sankirtana-yajne tanre bhaje sei dhanya

“Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya is the initiator of sankirtana [congregational chanting of the holy name of Lord Krishna]. One who worships Him through sankirtana is fortunate indeed”
