"Pada Seva means to serve the lotus feet of Guru and Krishna. You cannot serve Krishna without Guru, or serve just Guru without serving Krishna. They must be served or offered pada seva simultaneously." - Srila Prabhupada

The Secret is Revealed

Once a friend of mine visited us and presented us with a book called ‘The Secret’. This is a best-selling 2006 self-help motivational book authored by Rhonda Byrne. The book is based on the belief of the law of attraction and describes how our thoughts can shape our lives. The author states that every thought has a frequency, it is a force by which we attract what we think and when one emits the perfect frequency of what one wants, the item is attracted and delivered. In this book, the author reveals a secret – a secret by which one can acquire wealth, power, good health and good relationships.

The secret is to
ask – for what we want,
believe– that we have received it and finally
receive – feel as though we have received it; and it will then be ours.

This could be applied to any field- literature, religion, philosophy. All the people who knew this secret have been the greatest achievers in history: Plato, Newton, Shakespeare, Beethoven, Lincoln, Edison, Einstein.

As I read this book, a thought crept up in my mind. Does this principle of the law of attraction also hold true in the spiritual plane?  To my surprise, I found great similarity in the concept of the Secret and teachings of Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita.

Krishna means all attractive. He is full of all the six opulences, unparalleled in the entire creation. But instead of getting attracted to Krishna, we spend all our lives chasing material pleasures. This material world is described by Krishna as
temporary world, which is full of miseries
Bhagavad Gita – 8.15
Thus we always end up getting more and more entangled and frustrated. If at all we manage to get some happiness, it is transient.  We keep on pursuing happiness in this world, which is an illusion like a mirage, only because our knowledge is stolen by illusion, that we are attracted to material pleasures instead of being attracted to the Lord. The Lord states in the Gita:
Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me.
Bhagavad Gita - 7.15
Lord Krishna tells us in the Gita how we can attain Him and thus be eternally happy.
A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries.
Bhagavad Gita – 5.29
Hence if we wish to be eternally happy, we must develop intense love for Krishna and sincerely beg for His mercy.

The secret is to remember Him at all times and surrender with intelligence and mind. We should have unflinching faith and believe in His grace and then we are sure to receive His mercy.

Having said that, remembering Him constantly doesn’t mean that we neglect our material engagements or worldly duties. Rather Krishna has instructed us that while continuing in our respective material engagements and responsibilities, we must always remember Him.
Therefore Arjuna, you should always think of Me in the form of Krishna and at the same time carry out your prescribed duty (of fighting). With your activities dedicated to Me and your mind and intelligence fixed on Me, you will attain Me without doubt.
Bhagavad Gita 8.7
By fixing our mind and intelligence in Krishna and by emitting the perfect thought frequency, we can attain Him without a doubt.

Thus we too can be achievers, all we should do is very sincerely beg the Lord for His mercy, have faith in His grace and we shall certainly, receive His Mercy and go back to Godhead.

This is the secret to attain the perfection of human life.
